Guided Fossil Hunts

A Unique Experience for the Whole Family

Become a fossil hunter for a day and explore one of Denmark’s most unique natural areas! Faxe Limestone Quarry is filled with 63-million-year-old fossils from the ancient sea that once covered all of Faxe – and today, you can excavate them with your own hands. A different and unforgettable family adventure that combines fresh air, shared activities, and fascinating natural history.

Find Your Own Fossils – Corals, Shark Teeth, and Snails from the Ancient Sea

Our experienced guide begins with an introduction at the museum to the most common fossils found in the unique limestone of Faxe. We then head down into the quarry – equipped with hammer and chisel – to search for your own million-year-old discoveries. You may find corals, snails, shark teeth, or shells from the sea that once washed over this part of Denmark.

The guide is available for two hours, but you decide how long you want to search. Some groups find their treasure quickly – others spend an extra hour exploring. It’s your fossil hunt.

Your Ticket Also Includes Admission to KALK Museum

Your fossil hunting ticket also includes admission to the geological museum KALK, where you can examine your finds at the activity tables and journey back in time through the exhibition Denmark’s Fossil Coral Reef – the story of the 63-million-year-old coral reef that formed the limestone beneath Faxe. It is the perfect extension of the day, placing your discoveries in their geological and historical context.

You are welcome to take your fossils home as a personal souvenir – or have them displayed at the museum so that other visitors can enjoy your discoveries.

We recommend booking your ticket in advance – fossil hunts have limited departures and often sell out quickly, especially on weekends. Please note that this tour is conducted in English.
