18 meters underground, Stevnsfortet is transformed into a unique concert venue when an award-winning composer blends music and architecture over two evenings in October.
This October, the rugged corridors of Stevns Klint will serve as the setting for a unique concert experience, in which the acclaimed percussionist and composer Ying-Hsueh Chen will transform Stevns Fort into a living soundscape.
Sonic Architecture is a visionary concert series created by Ying-Hsueh Chen in 2022. The project explores the interplay between sound, music, and architectural spaces and revives an ancient practice in which music emerges in close dialogue with the acoustics and materials of its surroundings.
The dripping water at Stevns Fort and the deep hum of the enormous dehumidifiers will not merely be background noise—they will become key players:
“At the upcoming concerts at Stevnsfort, I want to explore how noise and unusual acoustic conditions can create unique musical experiences while highlighting the distinctive qualities of the spaces,” says Ying-Hsueh Chen about his approach to the underground as a concert venue.
Regarding the rationale behind opening the underground space at FORT as a concert venue, museum curator Anders Knudsen says: “In principle, we like the idea of opening the underground space for purposes other than showcasing the Cold War and the fort’s history, but a special place like Stevnsfort calls for something extraordinary and unique. We believe that Ying-Hsueh Chen’s work and her distinctive musical sensibility meet those requirements, and we are incredibly excited to attend the performance.”
