Going forward, school classes from the municipalities of Stevns and Faxe will be able to participate in free educational programs at unique local museums.

Fossil hunts and Cold War history in authentic settings will now be free for school classes in the municipalities of Faxe and Stevns. As part of an updated joint operating agreement between the East Zealand Museum and the municipalities, Geomuseum Faxe and the Stevnsfort Cold War Museum now each offer a free educational program for schools in the two municipalities.
– We’re really happy to be able to give back to the local community by making it even easier for schools and institutions to visit these unique local museums. I’d also like to commend and thank the municipalities for their strong collaboration, characterized by constructive dialogue and creativity, regarding the renewal of the joint operating agreement,” says Kasper Renström Østervig, director of the East Zealand Museum.
Specifically, students in grades 0–9 can participate in free guided fossil hunts, where they are introduced to the history of the Faxe Limestone Quarry, including the new ecosystems that have formed there and the fossils that can be found in the quarry.
Students in grades 4–9 can swap their classroom for the spectacular underground Stevnsfort, which was on the front lines during the Cold War and played a key role in the defense of Denmark and NATO.
– A strong awareness of where we come from as human beings is an essential part of our general education—part of our cultural heritage. That is why we are pleased that, with the new agreement with the East Zealand Museum, we can now strengthen this aspect of our children’s and young people’s education. This applies to everyone from the youngest children in daycare centers and preschools to the oldest students in upper elementary grades, say the two mayors, Henning Urban Dam Nielsen of Stevns and Ole Vive of Faxe.
The free tours are available to public, independent, and private schools in the municipalities of Faxe and Stevns. An educational program typically costs about 1,000 kroner per class. A specific educational program at each museum is free—customized programs for schools will still be subject to a fee.
Free admission for daycare centers and preschools
With the renewal of the joint operating agreement, preschools and daycare centers will receive free admission to Geomuseum Faxe and the grounds surrounding the Stevnsfort Cold War Museum.
As a general rule, children are admitted free of charge to museums, unless they are taking a guided tour; however, until now, teachers have had to pay for tickets when visiting with their students.
The purpose of the joint operating agreement is to ensure clear and effective coordination of the collaboration between the municipalities and the East Zealand Museum. The updated joint operating agreement was signed on April 10, 2025, and replaces the previous joint operating agreement dated January 1, 2020.
