Stevns Klint

Stevns Klint included on UNESCO's list of sites worthy of preservation

The cliff tells the story of how an asteroid hit the Earth around 66 million years ago. years ago, an asteroid hit
Earth and caused a massive natural disaster. It is estimated that half of the animal life died and many species disappeared. Among the animal species that disappeared were the dinosaurs, ammonites (squid related to nautiluses) and belemnites (the squid whose fossil remains we call 'wick candles').

The asteroid hit the ground with such force that it was pulverized on impact. Prior to this, violent volcanic eruptions in what is now India had released large amounts of ash into the atmosphere. The ash was now mixed with dust from the asteroid. This prevented sunlight from reaching Earth, making it difficult for plants to thrive.

As the dust fell towards the Earth, it settled as a layer on the surface. We call this layer of soil 'fish clay'. In some places it was washed away or blown away. In other places it became a thin, gray layer that became part of the Earth's stratification. 2 American scientists have determined that fish clay contains the remains of a celestial body due to its high iridium content. Iridium is an element that is very rarely found on Earth, but is contained in asteroids, for example. On Stevns Klint you can see the fish clay layer in several places as a dark stripe between chalk and chalk. We also call it the K/T boundary (Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary)
