Guided fossil hunts

Fossil Hunt – a special experience for the whole family
Become a fossil hunter for a day and explore one of Denmark’s most unique natural areas! The Faxe Limestone Quarry is teeming with 63-million-year-old fossils from the ancient sea that once covered all of Faxe—and today you can dig them up with your own hands. A unique and unforgettable family outing that combines fresh air, shared activities, and living natural history.
Find your own fossils—corals, shark teeth, and snails from the ancient ocean
Our knowledgeable guide will start with an introduction at the museum to the most common fossils found in the unique Faxe limestone. Then we’ll head down into the quarry—equipped with hammers and chisels—and search for your own million-year-old finds. You might discover corals, snails, shark teeth, or clams from the ocean that once washed over this part of Denmark.
The guide is available for two hours, but you decide for yourselves how long you want to search. Some groups find the treasure quickly—others take an extra hour. It’s your fossil hunt.
The ticket also grants admission to KALK
The ticket for the fossil hunt also grants you access to the KALK Geological Museum, where you can examine your finds at the activity tables and embark on a journey of discovery into the past with the exhibition “Denmark’s Fossil Coral Reefs” —the story of the 63-million-year-old coral reef that formed the limestone beneath Faxe. It’s the perfect way to round out the day, putting your finds into a geological and historical context.
You can take the fossils home as a personal souvenir—or have them displayed at the museum so other visitors can enjoy your finds.
We recommend buying tickets in advance —the fossil hunts have limited departures and fill up quickly, especially on weekends. The tour is generally conducted in Danish, but the guide will provide explanations in English as much as possible when needed.
