The special exhibition NOT OF THIS EARTH takes families back in time to medieval explanations of the natural world—and forward to today’s scientific understanding of the world with Nicolaus Steno, the founder of geology. A thought-provoking and surprising journey that poses big questions in a way that even the youngest visitors can follow along.

You'll find the special exhibition on the first floor of KALK, which also offers a panoramic view of the Faxe Limestone Quarry as well as activity tables that invite the whole family to get creative.

DENMARK'S FOSSIL CORAL REEFS – Dive into a 63-million-year-old ancient ocean

The exhibition “DENMARK’S FOSSIL CORAL REEFS” brings to life the 63-million-year-old coral reef that formed the limestone at the Faxe Limestone Quarry. Discover a world where marine crocodiles, sharks, fish, and nautiluses swam in search of prey, and where crabs, sea urchins, and snails crawled along the bottom of the reef that today lies hidden beneath Faxe. All illustrated with unique fossils straight from the limestone quarry—supplemented by beautiful graphics and animations that bring the ancient ocean to life.

At the activity tables, children can sort real fossils and examine microfossils under microscopes—a hands-on experience that rarely gets finished on the first try.

Would your family like to try their hand at finding their own fossils? On the guided fossil hunt at Faxe Limestone Quarry, you can search for traces of the ancient ocean that are millions of years old—right in the quarry. The fossil hunt must be booked separately and has limited departures, so be sure to reserve your spots well in advance.

Children have free admission to the exhibits. Tickets can be purchased at the museum entrance.
