Standing on the edge and looking down into the huge limestone quarry, you have direct access to the story of a very distant past, when the entire area was a vast deep-sea coral reef that was home to a myriad of life. Today, it is the world's oldest known deep-sea coral reef. At KALK, we invite you into history.

Fossil hunting - the practicalities
The light is bright and it can be very hot in the quarry. We therefore recommend sunglasses or a cap, protection from the sun and something to drink on the trip. We also recommend clothes that can withstand getting dirty, practical shoes and a bag or backpack for the fossils that will be taken home.
Unfortunately, pets are not allowed on our guided fossil hunts.
We will cancel if it is deemed dangerous to enter the quarry due to weather conditions - including lightning and thunderstorms.
We go fossil hunting every weekend and public holiday from Easter through June, every day in July and August, and again on weekends in September and October, and during the fall holidays.
Hammer and chisel rental
You can rent a good quality hammer and chisel in the museum shop and explore Faxe Kalkbrud yourself. The rental fee is DKK 50 per set and comes with a nice booklet that you can use to identify the fossils.
