Fossil Hunting at the Faxe Limestone Quarry – A Special Experience
Are you looking for a truly special experience to share? Fossil hunting at Faxe Kalkbrud is an unforgettable experience for the whole family, colleagues on a trip, club outings, or other groups looking for something more than the usual—in the fresh air and unique natural surroundings of East Zealand.
Your Own Guide – In Search of 63-Million-Year-Old Fossils
The group will meet at the KALK Museum, where your own dedicated guide will introduce you to the most common fossils found in the unique Faxe limestone. Then you’ll head down into the quarry—equipped with a hammer and chisel—and search together for corals, shark teeth, snails, and clams from the ancient sea that covered this part of Denmark 63 million years ago.
The guide is available for two hours, but you set the pace yourselves. This private fossil hunt allows for immersion and shared discovery—without any other groups.
The ticket also grants admission to the KALK Museum
The ticket for the private fossil hunt grants the entire group access to the KALK Geological Museum, where you can examine your finds at the activity tables and explore the exhibition “Denmark’s Fossil Coral Reefs” —the story of the 63-million-year-old coral reef that formed the limestone beneath Faxe. It’s the perfect way to end the day, putting your finds into perspective and giving the group even more to talk about.
Everyone can take their fossils home as a personal souvenir—or have them displayed at the museum.
Book well in advance —capacity is limited, and popular dates fill up quickly. The tour is generally conducted in Danish, but the guide will provide explanations in English as much as possible when needed.
