Kalk
History you can take home with you
KALK is something as rare as a museum where you have to dig up the past yourself. And where you can take both your finds and your new knowledge home with you.
Since limestone mining began in Faxe about 900 years ago, a huge amount of fossils have been found - shark teeth, crabs, snails, sea urchins, and plants.More than 500 of the many different animal species of the ancient sea have been found hidden in the limestone layers of the old seabed. That's why there are enough ancient relics for everyone who visits KALK. Once you've found your very own fossils, we'll help you find out what it is you've unearthed.
Lime and culture
The special coral limestone has been crucial to the lives lived around the quarry and is used in iconic buildings such as the Marble Church. KALK unfolds this special cultural history through stories and activities.
An educational project
KALK is not just about showcasing the past, it's about understanding it. But KALK is also about how we are together and how we pass on knowledge to the next generations through play and discovery.
At KALK, we don't just show you ancient finds and fossils displayed in glass cases. We literally invite you to get your hands in history. Both in the museum and in the huge limestone quarry, there's plenty of room to explore, rummage around and get your hands into the past.
We invite you to pick up a hammer and chisel and try your hand at amateur geology. You can make fascinating discoveries and gain a much deeper understanding of a very distant past. And maybe you'll be the one to make the next big find?
